Mars Curiosity rover image shows woman-shaped figure

Woman-shaped figure spotted on Mars

The image found in the raw feed from the rover on the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Mars mission websiteshows a rocky wall on the fourth planet from the sun and probably because of a trick of shadows, there's a human figure sort of standing on what looks to be a tiny rock precipice outcropping.

The womanly shape is somewhat ghostly, with a sort of whispy flow.

It reminds me Eugene Delacroix's "Liberty Leading the People," which could bode poorly for poor Curiosity if it turned out to be more than shadows. In this metaphor, Curiosity is the bourgeoisie and headed for the Martian version of a guillotine.

I jest, but it's amazing what the human eye and mind can do if given a little time and the Internet.

Or the original face on Mars.

So the digital hullabaloo over the whispy ghost woman of Mars is brought to you by Curiosity via the website UFO Sightings Daily, which brought the image to the world's attention.

Take appropriate measures.

Curiosity is part of the Mars Science Laboratory mission, which landed on the planet on Aug. 5, 2012. The rover is the fourth successful rover on the planet after the smaller Spirit and Opportunity rovers that landed in 2004 and 1997's Pathfinder mission and its Sojourner rover. Curiosity's mission is to collect soil and rock samples to analyze them for organic compounds among other things.

It does have a laser, though, which is used to vaporize thin layers from collected samples so it can analyze the interior composition of the samples.

So in a pinch, Curiosity could conceivably use the laser for defense. Again...I jest.
