Samsung might be unveiling new smartphones with holographic and foldable displays soon. Considering the company’s superb track record in creating innovative designs, the technology is likely to become available soon.
It was recently discovered that the company filed before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) in the third quarter of 2014. The filing was for a technology that would allow a device to display holograms, although it may not yet be as advanced as users believe. Based on the published application, the patented product will feature a normal body and screen, but it will have a light emission device above the display, plus a thicker material over the emission device. As a result, users can visualize their icons and content inside the material.
Patently Mobile showed images of how the device would work. When the screen corresponding to the entrance optical component emits light, a holographic image would appear over the light guide component. The display may be able to present certain contents in holographic form, such as icons, providing users with a 3D experience. Apparently, Samsung is planning to feature holograms in the simplest sense to begin with, and not immediately focus on detailed scenes. The practical nature of the patent can also indicate that the company is serious about introducing the technology in its future devices.
Samsung did not yet comment or make a new announcement regarding the arrival of holographic displays. It is also unlikely that the state-of-the-art screen will launch in the Samsung Galaxy S7.
Samsung did mention its plan of showcasing foldable displays soon. Tech Times wrote that Lee Chang-hoon, vice-president of Samsung Electronics business strategic group, introduced late in 2014, the company’s plans of providing devices with foldable displays. According to Chang-hoon, the new displays will be included in their next-generation tablet and smartphone until early 2016. It is possible that Chang-hoon may be referring to the Galaxy Note 5 and Samsung Galaxy S7.
The company also applied for a patent for a dual-display folding product with an advanced hinge design that features an opening and closing configuration. There will also be sensing hover capabilities for both screens via magnetic field sensors and infrared sensors, based on the patent. This means that one screen will detect the fingers of the user while the other will sense an input pen.
More news and updates on Samsung’s holographic and foldable screens are expected in the following months.
